As a human geographer, my focuses on development theories include modernisation, sustainable development, alternative development models, and critical development theories. My primary focus is on China's regional development. A long-term study tries to track the current rural development of China, such as the rural revitalization movement.
My current work attempts to understand changing rural revitalization of China which is driven by forces of modernisation, urbanization, and tourism, with strong influences from the policies and China's state and local institutions.
As a tourism scholar, my interests lie in the intersections between tourism and local, regional, and even national, development. My doctoral study has explored the concept of tourism livelihood. Some of my continuous work concentrates on extending the livelihood concept to broader tourism development theories.
